Bisphosphonates are a class of non-hormonal drugs used to prevent and treat osteoporosis by mimicking the structure of pyrophosphate which is a component normal bones have, and inhibiting of bone-eroding cells known as osteoclasts to allow osteoblasts, bone-building cells, to work better and build healthy bones. This, consequently, increases bone density and prevents vertebral fractures. Some bisphosphonates are alendronate, etidronate and risedronate.
