Andrx Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
Andrx pharmaceutical company develops, manufactures and commercializes generic versions of controlled-release, niche and immediate-release pharmaceutical products, including oral contraceptives; distributes pharmaceutical products, primarily generics, which have been commercialized by others, as well as their own, primarily to independent pharmacies, pharmacy chains and physicians' offices; and develops and manufactures pharmaceutical products for other pharmaceutical companies, including combination products and controlled-release formulations utilizing their patented technologies and formulation capabilities.
In its generics business, Andrx creates bioequivalent versions of controlled-release brand name pharmaceuticals, using its proprietary drug delivery technologies as well as bioequivalent versions of specialty, niche and immediate-release brand pharmaceutical products, including oral contraceptives. Their product names are Acetaminophen and Codeine Phosphate Tablets, USP, Albuterol Inhalation Aerosol, Famotidine Tablets USP, Hydrocodone Bitartrate and Ibuprofen Tablets, etc. Their other products are Anexsia, Entex PSE Capsules, Altoprev, etc. Many of Andrx's controlled-release bioequivalent and brand name pharmaceuticals utilize Andrx's proprietary drug delivery technologies to control the release characteristics of a variety of orally administered drugs. Controlled-release products are formulations that release active drug compounds in the body gradually and predictably over a 12 to 24-hour period and therefore need to be taken only once or twice daily, as opposed to immediate release products that have to be taken 3-4 times per day. Controlled-release products typically provide numerous benefits over immediate-release drugs. Andrx maintains five manufacturing facilities with approximately 550,000 square feet of production and production support space. Production capability includes state of the art equipment for both controlled-release and immediate-release products including computerized fluid-bed coaters, high speed tablet presses and encapsulation machinery, aqueous and solvent capable tablet coaters and high capacity packaging lines.
