Axcan Scandipharm, Inc.
Current Chairman of the Board, Léon F. Gosselin, established Axcan Pharma, a leading specialty pharmaceutical company in the field of gastroenterology, in 1982. Since its inception, Axcan has focused on a single specialization on which to build its reputation. This singular focus has allowed the Company to leverage its resources hence maximizing its effectiveness in building enduring relationships with health authorities and medical practitioners around the globe.
Axcan Pharma is a leading specialty pharmaceutical company that develops, manufactures, markets and distributes a broad line of gastrointestinal products primarily in North America and Europe. All activities underscore the Company's single, well defined mission to improve the quality of care and health of patients suffering from gastrointestinal diseases and disorders by providing effective therapies for patients and their specialized caregivers.
Through internal product development and synergistic acquisitions of products and companies, Axcan has built a leadership position in the North American gastroenterology market; more than 80 percent of the Company's business is generated from North American sales. Despite the relatively high number of patients suffering from gastrointestinal diseases and disorders, there are only about 10,000 gastroenterologists in North America. Since the Company markets specialized products to a relatively cohesive community of physicians, its sales force is able to reach this market more easily than pharmaceutical companies with a product portfolio targeting a more diverse range of diseases. And, since the causes of most gastrointestinal diseases are unknown, most treatments currently available provide relief from symptoms rather than a cure. Therefore, users of Axcan's products tend to be chronic patients who remain under the care of a physician for a prolonged period.
Axcan Pharma and its global operations are working hand in hand to become a multinational leader for disorders linked to gastroenterology. Currently, the Company markets more than 40 GI products and dosage strengths worldwide including several that hold a leading market position. In addition to its marketing activities, Axcan carries out the research and development of products at an advanced stage of development that it acquires or licenses from third parties.
Axcan’s Vision is to become the reference gastroenterology specialty pharmaceutical Company. Their goal is to achieve these objectives by providing value-added therapeutics for a broad spectrum of unmet needs in gastroenterology, achieving a leadership position in their targeted gastroenterology segments, delivering a competitive shareholder return, offering stimulating and rewarding opportunities for their employees.
