Celltech Pharmaceuticals, Inc was founded in 1980, with the National Enterprise Board as its major shareholder, creating the UK's first biotechnology company using leading edge recombinant DNA technology licensed from the Medical Research Council. The company initially had a broad research remit relating to the commercial application of biotechnology and was active in fields including the manufacture of proteins in cell culture, medical diagnostics, antibody engineering, food processing technology, and human therapeutics. Early achievements included the successful commercialization of antibodies as protein purification reagents and diagnostic tools. In the therapeutic antibody field, a combination of expertise and innovative technologies enables Celltech to move rapidly from antibody targets to clinical trials of engineered human antibodies. Celltech is pursuing a centered strategy, with its substantial investment in being sustained by revenues from its profitable and cash generative pharmaceutical business. The company is focused upon maximizing value retention from its products, whilst maintaining an appropriate risk reward profile. The company initiated a major expansion of its research base, particularly in the area of medicinal chemistry, and also implemented a strategy of partnering for strength with pharmaceutical companies.
