Founded in 1984, Sepracor was originally comprised of several diverse business units. In 1989, they embarked on a strategy of developing single isomers and active metabolites of many of the world's largest selling drugs, with the objective of developing their own proprietary pipeline of pharmaceutical products. Sepracor became a publicly traded corporation in 1991 and subsequently divested its non pharmaceutical business units into four different companies, retaining its core pharmaceutical business.

Sepracor currently commercializes three proprietary products namely Lunestatm for the treatment of insomnia; Xopenex Hfatm, Inhalation Aerosol, a hydrofluoroalkane metered dose inhaler as well as Xopenex, Inhalation Solution, both of which are indicated for the treatment or prevention of bronchospasm in patients with reversible obstructive airway disease.
 
Sepracor's out licensing agreements includes Schering Plough for Clarinex, Sanofi Aventis for Allegra; and UCB Pharma for Xyzal Xusaltm.Sepracor submitted a New Drug Application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for arformoterol tartrate inhalation solution, a long-acting beta agonist formulation for long term maintenance treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
