Xcel Pharmaceuticals Has Been Acquired by Valeant Pharmaceuticals International. Valeant Pharmaceuticals International is a global, research based, specialty pharmaceutical company that discovers, develops, manufactures and markets pharmaceutical products, primarily in the areas of neurology, dermatology and infectious disease. Valeant has made rapid strides under a new management team that laid out a strategic vision with a renewed focus on its specialty pharmaceuticals business, and has implemented major changes in the areas of product management, business development, research and development, corporate governance and supply chain operations.
Valeant announces advancement of research and development funding to accelerate Viramidine Phase 3 clinical trials, The Company makes strategic acquisition of Amarin Pharmaceuticals, Inc expanding the company's specialty neurology platform with Permax and Zelapar, and they present 24 week data for Phase 2 of Viramidine at European Association for the Study of the Liver Conference in Berlin, Germany. The Company forms Scientific Advisory Board of key opinion leaders to aid in strategic research and development planning, Valeant acquires global rights to Tasmar, further building the company's specialty neurology platform, Valeant completes repurchase and redemption of 6 and half percent convertible subordinated notes.
Valeant is unique as a specialty pharmaceutical company, with a truly global infrastructure and the ability to discover new molecules, take them through the clinic and fully commercialize them as global products. It is a mid sized specialty pharmaceutical company with revenues in 2004 of 683 million dollar, which included product sales of $606 million. These sales are generated through 575 products and more than 2,400 stock keeping units, and are sold by approximately 1,000 sales representatives around the world.
Valeant has a world class research and development organization with four late stage clinical compounds and numerous discovery targets and a global manufacturing network currently comprised of 12 factories that is actively in the process of being rationalized to five sites worldwide.
Valeant's core products can be categorized into one of their three therapeutic areas Dermatology, Infectious Disease and Neurology. Valeant focuses promotional efforts on ten global products, but also has a number of other successful regional products throughout the world.
