Bristol-Myers Squibb: Leading the Pharmaceutical Industry
Bristol-Myers was founded in 1887 when William McLaren Bristol and John Ripley Myers invested $5,000 in Clinton Pharmaceutical Company. It was located in Clinton, New York. This company was officially registered on December, 1887. They had to work very hard because their goals were to provide high quality and to maintain an acceptable financial situation. In 1898, the company changed its name and became Bristol- Myers Company. The first product launched by this company was the laxative mineral salt. Since then, the company continued growing, in fact, in 1924, their sales topped $1 million and the company was selling its products in 26 countries. In 1929, the shares of the company were listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
After the postwar depression, Bristol-Myers moved its headquarters offices to Manhattan and started advertising its products in public. In 1943, the company acquired Cheplin Laboratories, a New York manufacturer of acidophilus milk. During the war, Cheplin was the most important provider to the U.S. War Production Board’s crash program of mass-produced penicillin. Bristol-Myers is a powerful corporation. In deed, in 1972 Clairol joined the company and more acquisitions followed, such as Drackett, Mead Johnson, Zimmer and Westwood.
Today this company employs around 43,000 people around the world. This company has very important donations programs. The Bristol-Myers Squibb Patient Assistance Foundation is a non-profit organization created by Bristol in 1998 to provide financial help and medicines to people who need it. Besides, Bristol always is looking for the best practices. Improving the health of people and the environment are two elements present in the decisions of Bristol.
