The World of Brain Tumor Research is Changing at a Rapid Pace
(PRWEB) August 30, 2005 -- The American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) has entered the most exciting period of our history in funding brain tumor research. We awarded $1.5 million dollars for research this year at institutions throughout the United States and Canada.
The world of brain tumor research is evolving at a rapid pace, but there is less federal funding available to spend on research. According to Naomi Berkowitz, ABTA Executive Director, “Private funding sources, such as ABTA must pick up the shortfall to assure that research continues, and at an accelerated pace. Our patients deserve the benefit of all that science can offer.”
It is hopeful that the research we are funding will lead to more effective treatments, better delivery methods, and an understanding about the cause of brain tumors. John Hipchen, ABTA President says, “New treatments mean new weapons to fight this disease. New treatments bring us closer to our mission of eliminating brain tumors.”
Therefore, to keep up the pace of discovery this century has witnessed thus far, the American Brain Tumor Association granted more awards than ever before in its 33-year history. They are funding thirty-one Research Fellowships and multiple grants to cover the spectrum from laboratory to translational to clinical research. In additional to these post-doctoral awards, nine outstanding Medical Students received fellowships to give them the opportunity for doing research during their summer quarter, in a prominent brain tumor researcher’s lab.
