Bisphosphonates Battle Bone Diseases

Advertising Information for rxboomer
Bisphosphonates are drugs used to avoid bone breakdown. Bisphosphonates are known analogs of pyrophosphate. The pyrophosphates can function as regulators of calcium. Chemists have had knowledge of bisphosphonates since the 19th century. Bisphosphonates were originally used for industrial purposes such as the prevention of corrosion. Washing powders and the textile, oil and fertilizer industries were also beneficiaries of the properties of the bisphosphonates.

Three decades ago, several studies began. These studies were conducted concerning the evolution of bisphosphonates as a drug that could help heal bone diseases. In 1968, the first report concerning bisphosphonates was published. This report mainly described the biological characteristics that this drug has. This was the time when scientists realized how bisphosphonates were able to slow down the resorption of the bones.

These drugs reduce the way that osteoclats (bone cells) resorb the bones producing inhibitors to the formation of osteoclats. Thanks to the studies that began almost four decades ago, today we can understand the way this drug works and the differences that the types of bisphosphonates have between each other.

The resorption of the bones is present in bone diseases such as Paget’s disease, fibrous dysplacia and metatastic cancer. Despite eliminating bone resorption, bisphosphonates cannot cure the above mentioned diseases. However, this drug is able to alleviate pain associated to the above mentioned diseases. Bisphosphonates cannot obstruct in the process of healing fractures. These drugs can be used in the treatment of bone disorders that are non-malignant and of disorders related to cancer.
