GlaxoSmithKline: A Successful Company
The business started in 1830 when John K. Smith opened a pharmacy in Philadelphia. However, in 1841 his younger brother George became a member of the company and they established John K. Smith & Co. In 1842, Thomas Beecham launched a pill laxative in England. This product became very successful. In 1982, SmithKline purchased Allergan and formed an alliance with Beckman Instruments Inc, and in 1989, SmtihKline Beckman and The Beecham Group merged to consolidate SmithKline Beecham, together they launched a hepatitis B vaccine in the United States and France.
GlaxoSmithKline is one of the most important pharmaceutical companies in the world. The company is the only pharmaceutical that attacks the three most “important” diseases determined by the WHO (World Heath Organization): HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. This company is present in 80 countries, and more than 110,000 people work at this enterprise. GlaxoSmithKline works focusing on quality, for this company, research and development is the key to success; in fact, more than 15,000 employees work in research and development.
