Lorazepam: An Effective Anti-Depressant and Anxiety Medication
In nowadays stressful world, science brings us new options to optimize our lifestyle and consequently, make it easier and more relaxing. Lately, lots of people have been suffering anxiety attacks, and lots of them have been prescribed with lorazepan.
Lorazepam is a medication classified as a benzodiazepine which contains antidepressants, anxiolytic and sedative properties. Usually, it comes as a tablet and/or liquid to take through the mouth. Because of the nature of this medicine, it is extremely important that users follow the directions of the prescription very strictly. In case of any misunderstanding, do not think twice to ask your doctor.
One of the main risks to use lorazepam is that it can easily become habit-forming. Therefore, patients using it must never exceed the recommended time of metering. If consumed for a longer time or in larger doses, the organism may develop tolerance, making the drug less effective. In the same way, if the patient decides to stop taking the medication without first asking his/her doctor, terrible consequences (such as sleeplessness, irritability and anxiousness) may take place. For this reason, the doctor may decrease the medication gradually.
Besides acting against anxiety, lorazepam is also used to treat epilepsy, nausea, insomnia, bowel syndrome and vomiting from cancer treatment. It is also used to control the agitation caused with alcohol excess. As with every medication, certain special precautions must be taken. Usually, lorazepam is contraindicated in pregnant women, patients suffering from heart, lung or liver diseases.
Regarding side effects, lorazepam is to blame for dizziness, drowsiness, tiredness, weakness, diarrhea, dry mouth, upset stomach and changes in the appetite. Moreover, the most common side effects are constipation, blurred vision, restlessness and/or excitement, frequent urination and/or difficulty when urinating; when the above mentioned symptoms are severe, the patient must tell his/her doctor.
