Premarin: No More Menopausal Symptoms
Premarin is an estrogen-only therapy product. It is extracted from the pregnant mare’s urine, which is commonly known as PMU. It is manufactured by Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories, Inc. and it has been in the market for more than 50 years. It is considered to be the most used drug in the field of estrogen replacement therapy (ERT). Besides, there are around one million Premarin consumers in the United States only.
Premarin is a conjugated estrogen, meaning a female sex hormone that is necessary for many processes in the body. Through this time, it has been used in order to help women with their hormonal deficiency symptoms provoked by hysterectomy of menopause, some types of breast cancer, not only in some women, but also in postmenopausal women, prostate and urethra cancer, deficiency in ovary function involving infertility and vagina degeneration. Nevertheless, other advantageous features have been discovered in this estrogen, and these days, it is being used in order to prevent suffering from heart disease and/or osteoporosis. Premarin has proven to be effective in increasing bone mass. This is the reason why now it is used to prevent this disease.
Vaginal dryness, night sweats and hot flashes are comprised among the symptoms caused by menopause that are treated with Premarin. If taken alone, Premarin is an appropriate method for those women who have undergone a hysterectomy and experience moderate menopausal symptoms. Nevertheless, it can be taken combined with progestin tablets in case menopausal symptoms are severe and/or if women have not had a hysterectomy. Regardless of the situation, Premarin always has to be prescribed. Pregnant women should not take this product under any circumstances.
