Flurazepam: Sleep Well!
Flurazepam is a medicament which is rapidly absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract and is rapidly metabolized. In this way, this medication is a great helper in the relaxation and sleeping processes. Moreover, it has been proven in several proofs and tests that Dalmane does decrease sleep latency and the number of awakenings. Consequently, sleep time is significantly increased. In numbers, Flurazepam induces sleep within 22 minutes and provides from 7 to 8 hours of sleep.
As with some other medicaments, Flurazepam must not be consumed during pregnancy or lactation. Many studies have shown there are great risks of malformations associated to the use of benzodiazepines. Moreover, when prescribed to elders, the initial dosage must not exceed 15mg per day so that dizziness, ataxia or oversedation takes place. In the same way, dosage must be observed when prescribed for emotional disorders such as depression because suicidal tendencies may appear.
Among the most common side effects dizziness, lightheadedness, ataxia and drowsiness can be mentioned. Nevertheless, these side effects are specifically frequent in elder patients or debilitated patients. Furthermore, cases of heartburns, headaches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, nervousness, upset stomach, irritability, weakness, palpitations, chest pains and apprehension have been reported. Also, some rare cases of flushes, sweating, blurred vision, shortness of breath, slurred of speech and hallucinations have been documented.
Regarding dosage, it is extremely important to realize that every dosage must be individualized. Nevertheless, it is recommended 30 mg for usual dosage in adults before retiring. In the case of elderly patients, the medication must start with 15 mg until the doctor considers it appropriate and/or individual responses are determined.
The consumption of certain medicaments, especially the ones prescribed for anxiety and/or depression must be constantly observed. Responsibility and consciousness must be the first factor we take into account when being prescribed these type of medication so that no collateral damage or consequences may happen.
